Getting Started with Amazon Bedrock

Amazon Bedrock provides API access to foundation models from leading AI companies, enabling you to build AI applications without managing infrastructure.

What is Bedrock?

Bedrock is a fully managed service that offers:

  • Multiple Models - Claude, Nova, Llama, Stable Diffusion
  • Serverless - No infrastructure to manage
  • Private - Your data isn't used to train models
  • Customizable - Fine-tune models on your data

Available Models

Text Generation

  • Claude (Anthropic) - Best for complex reasoning
  • Nova (Amazon) - Cost-effective, fast
  • Llama (Meta) - Open-source foundation

Image Generation

  • Stable Diffusion - High-quality image synthesis
  • Nova Canvas - Amazon's image model

Multimodal

  • Claude 3 - Text + image understanding
  • Nova Pro - Multimodal capabilities

Quick Start

Prerequisites

  1. AWS account with Bedrock access
  2. Model access enabled in Bedrock console
  3. AWS CLI configured

Python Example

import boto3
import json

bedrock = boto3.client('bedrock-runtime')

response = bedrock.invoke_model(
modelId='anthropic.claude-3-sonnet-20240229-v1:0',
body=json.dumps({
"anthropic_version": "bedrock-2023-05-31",
"max_tokens": 1024,
"messages": [
{"role": "user", "content": "Hello, Claude!"}
]
})
)

result = json.loads(response['body'].read())
print(result['content'][0]['text'])

Use Cases

  • Chatbots - Conversational AI assistants
  • Content Generation - Writing, summarization
  • Code Assistant - Code generation and review
  • Image Analysis - Understanding visual content
  • RAG Applications - Knowledge base Q&A

Cost Optimization

  • Use Nova models for simple tasks
  • Implement caching for repeated queries
  • Consider provisioned throughput for high volume

Next Steps

  • Build a chatbot with Bedrock
  • Implement RAG with Knowledge Bases
  • Deploy to edge with model distillation
